Max Meijer

Max Meijer (1959) studied museology at Reinwardt Academy Leiden, and went to Law School at Rotterdam’s Erasmus University. Took several courses in marketing, management and cultural governance and policy. Started his museum career as staff member of the Netherlands Museums Association in 1983. In 1990 he was appointed assistant to the director of the Haags Gemeentemuseum and later joined the management team of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1994, were he became Head of Marketing and Communications. From 1997-2001 he was at the management team of the State Agency for Cultural Heritage (ICN) in Amsterdam. In 2001 followed by his appointment as General Director of the city museums at Arnhem (Museum of Modern Art Arnhem and Historical City Museum Arnhem). In 2007 Max Meijer established TiMe Amsterdam with co-founder Petra Timmer.

Besides his professional positions Max has been (and still is) part time active in many other organizations like the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden (member of the supervisory board), the Netherlands Media Art Institute (president of the supervisory board), The Netherlands National Committee of ICOM (secretary), The Comité International des Musées D’Art Moderne, CIMAM (executive secretary) among others.

Traveled extensively during his work for museums, made contributions to exhibitions in leading museums in England, Italy, Germany, Poland, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, the United States and Taiwan. Published numerous articles on (museum) policy, fine arts and cultural marketing.

Core competencies: cultural heritage, cultural and museum policy, marketing, concept development, vision and strategy development, new business models, fundraising, corporate collections and creative industries.

Within TiMe Amsterdam Max Meyer focuses primarily on advising, counseling, concept and product development and cultural marketing. Also regularly hired to moderate symposia, workshops, brainstorm meetings and expert meetings.
